Charlotte Campus Safety & Security officers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Primary responsibilities include maintaining a safe and secure living and working environment, as well as the enforcement of parking regulations and efficient traffic flow.
Starting college is an exciting time, but I also know it can come with concerns for both students and parents. One of the questions I hear most often is, “Is campus safe?” My answer is simple: We work every day to ensure our students have a safe, secure and supportive environment where they can learn, grow and enjoy their college experience.
Our campus is located just blocks from Uptown Charlotte, putting you close to incredible opportunities and experiences. We want our Wildcats to enjoy everything Charlotte has to offer while knowing they have a strong support system behind them.
Our officers are approachable and genuinely care about our students. We aren’t just here when something goes wrong — we’re here to build relationships, provide support, and help every Wildcat feel at home.
Our safety-first approach starts with our campus buildings. That’s why every member of our community carries a JWU ID, and all campus buildings are secured through card-access systems.
Our Campus Safety & Security team is here 24 hours a day to help. Whether it’s providing assistance through our Safe Walk Program, responding to a call for service, or simply answering a question, our officers and dispatchers are always available. We also work closely with local police, fire and EMS partners to help ensure our campus remains prepared for whatever may arise.

How Our Team Keeps You Safe
Access Control
Entry to all campus buildings is controlled and monitored by an electronic card swipe access control system. Stop by the Safety & Security office to pick up a lanyard for your ID.
Improper use of an access card — for example, allowing unregistered guests to gain access a residence hall— can result in a suspension of access rights and/or referral to the student judiciary.
Blue Lights on Campus ✆
If you feel threatened on campus, look for the nearest Blue Light emergency telephone. There are 22 of them around campus.
CARE Team
The Crisis Aversion & Response Evaluation (CARE) Team is a group of campus administrators that share and coordinate information about the behavior of students who appear to pose a risk of harm to self or others. The team develops strategies, when needed, for early invention in accordance with existing university policies.
Project ID
To aid in the recovery of lost or stolen items, valuables are engraved with a unique number, which is then entered into a database with your information.
Safe Walk Escort Program
If you feel unsafe walking alone — at any time, for any reason — take advantage of JWU’s Safe Walk program, where a member of the JWU community will walk with you or give you a ride.
Safety Tips
JWU’s Charlotte Campus is situated in Center City, typically one of the Queen City’s safest areas. While crime is a concern in any urban environment, Charlotte students enjoy a safer environment due to campus-wide security features, including access control cards, cameras and security patrols.
Always walk in well lit areas; avoid alleys and shortcuts.
Walk in groups. If you don’t have a group to walk with, stay close to others walking in the same direction so you are not alone.
Do not carry valuables, including credit cards, cash or expensive jewelry, on your person when you do not need them. Traveling to and from class with these types of items can make you a target for robbery.
Do not use ATMs in the early morning hours. This is a prime time for robbery — criminals often watch ATMs for potential victims.
Do not leave valuables in plain view in your vehicle. Lock any electronics or other valuables in the trunk of your car when you are in class. Remove them when you get to your destination.
Do not ever give your debit or credit card information to anyone.
Register your emergency contacts.

Campus Safety & Security is responsible for the enforcement of university policies, security on campus, and providing a variety of services to the university’s students, faculty and staff. Emergency management is a component of the department, which focuses on crisis preparedness in the event of a campus or university emergency.
