If we’ve asked for a document, send it as soon as you can. Missing documentation can delay or reduce your aid.

After you file the FAFSA, JWU may ask for additional documents before your aid can be finalized. This page explains what we might ask for, how to figure out which form you need and how to send it securely. 

Which aid year do you need?

Financial aid is awarded one academic year at a time, running August through May. Most forms exist in separate versions for each aid year, and submitting the wrong one delays your file. If you’re starting classes in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027, you need the 2026-27 forms

You’ll also need to reapply each year. The FAFSA opens October 1 for the following academic year. JWU’s federal school code is 003404.

What is verification?

If you’re selected for verification, the U.S. Department of Education is asking JWU to confirm that the information on your FAFSA is accurate. It’s routine. Selection isn’t an accusation, and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your application.

If you’re selected, we’ll tell you exactly which documents we need. Depending on your situation, that could include:

  • Verification Worksheet — confirms household size and other FAFSA details
  • Identity & Statement of Educational Purpose — confirms who you are and that aid will be used for education
  • Asset Verification Worksheet — confirms assets reported on the FAFSA
  • Untaxed Income Worksheet — confirms income not reported on a tax return
  • Income Exclusion Worksheet — used when certain income shouldn’t count toward your eligibility

Send everything we ask for as quickly as you can. Verification has to finish before your aid can be finalized and applied to your account.

  • Private Loan Self-Certification — required by federal law before a private lender can release loan funds
  • Company Reimbursement — if your employer is paying part of your tuition
  • Military & Veteran Statement of Understanding — for students using VA education benefits
  • Student Information Release — gives a parent, guardian or other person permission to discuss your financial account with us

How to submit documents securely

Financial aid documents contain sensitive personal information. Use one of these methods — never regular email from a personal account.

  • Secure upload — our secure submission form below is the fastest option
  • JWU email — send from your JWU address to a JWU address
  • Fax — JWU Providence at 401-598-1040 or JWU Charlotte at 980-598-1350.

Giving a parent access to your information

A federal privacy law called FERPA protects your student records. Without a signed release from you, we can’t share information with your parents — even if they’re paying the bill. There are two separate forms: one for financial aid and account information, and one for academic records. You can sign either or both. Setting up an authorized payer is a different step that lets someone make payments, but it doesn’t give them access to your information.

What does it mean to be selected for verification?

The U.S. Department of Education has asked JWU to confirm the information on your FAFSA. It’s routine, some students are selected at random, and it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. Send the requested documents promptly so your aid can be finalized.

Which aid year form do I need?

Match the form to the academic year you’re applying for, not the year you’re filling it out. For example, if you’re starting classes in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027, use forms labeled 2026-27.

Am I a dependent or independent student?

Federal criteria decide this, not your family. You’re independent if you’re 24 or older by January 1 of the award year, married, a graduate student, a veteran or active-duty service member, supporting dependents of your own, or in certain circumstances involving foster care, guardianship or homelessness. Otherwise you’re a dependent student and your FAFSA requires your parents’ information — even if they don’t claim you on their taxes or help pay for college. If your family situation makes that impossible, contact your financial planning advisor.

Why can’t my parents get information about my financial aid?

Federal privacy law protects your records. Your parents need a signed Student Information Release on file before we can discuss your account with them.

How do I send documents safely?

Use the secure upload form, send from your JWU email address to a JWU address, or fax. Don’t send financial documents from a personal email account.

What happens if I don’t send a requested document?

Your aid could be delayed, reduced or cancelled. If you’re having trouble getting a document, contact your financial planning advisor before the deadline rather than after.
