Biography and Expertise
J. Donato Fortin received a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics and master’s degree in Engineering Mechanics and Mathematics from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. His dissertation was in steady-state deformations of moving beams. He joined JWU as an adjunct instructor at the Charleston campus in 2002, where he received the Adjunct Faculty award for 2002 – 2003. He joined JWU full time as an associate professor in Charlotte in 2004. Prior to joining the university, Fortin worked as a research engineer for WestRock (the Westvaco Corporation). His projects included machine control, carbon for double-layer capacitors and post-forming laminates. The latter projects resulted in research awards and a patent was awarded for improved forming of laminates. He has lectured in mathematics and engineering in several universities at home and abroad. Fortin’s pedagogical interest is inquiry-based learning. His research interest is badly-conditioned linear systems.
