Jeffrey M Longo (he/him)
Associate Professor College of Hospitality Management Sports, Entertainment, Event – Management Charlotte
Biography and Expertise
I have spent twenty seasons in professional hockey administration. I started my career as a public relations intern for the New York Rangers (National Hockey League). I later spent six seasons with the San Diego Gulls (West Coast Hockey League) – the last three as team President. While there, the team led the league in attendance all six seasons and won the league championship three times.
I moved to Charlotte, NC as President of the Charlotte Checkers (ECHL) in 2003 and helped orchestrate the team’s move into a new facility in uptown Charlotte (the NBA Charlotte Bobcats’ Time Warner Cable Arena).
In 2008, I took a position as the Vice President of Marketing and Community Initiatives for the New Jersey Devils (National Hockey League).
After two seasons in New Jersey, I returned to Charlotte where I am now an Associate Professor at Johnson & Wales University in the Sports, Events and Entertainment program.
I completed my Masters of Sports Administration at Wingate University in 2012.
I owned Fayetteville Marksmen Hockey Team in the Southern Professional Hockey League for one season.
In 2019, I co-founded a non-profit organization called Sports Biz Camps – a sports business 101 for high school students. The mission of Sports Biz Cares is to increase social mobility for high school students through education, while expanding diversity within the sports industry.
Our organization was born out of the recognition that a growing population of young people do not have access to finances, social capital, resources and relationships that are key ingredients for personal growth, professional development, and life-long success, and the realization that the sports industry has a unique capacity to help address this problem.
I grew up playing hockey (goalie) and played four years of competitive club hockey at Rutgers University.
I live approximately twenty miles outside of Charlotte with my wife and two daughters.
