Biography and Expertise

Dr. James Woods has a diverse professional history that includes research and development, product development, business operations, business development, academic instruction, and team leadership. His career focuses on serving and improving the lives of others. James’ early work sought to uncover the underlying neurological mechanisms of drug abuse and discover therapeutic agents to treat alcoholism. He then went to work for a mid-sized contract research organization and was involved in pharmaceutical testing (PK/PD, ADME) and product development where he led the refinement of a licensed technology that screens neuroscience-based therapeutics in several disease areas (i.e., tremors, Parkinson’s disease, drug abuse, and epilepsy). Dr. Woods later moved to Wake Forest Health Sciences as the Business Manager for a 120-person department within the Office of Research, and oversaw a multi-million dollar operating budget. While in this role, Dr. Woods became a founding member of Preclinical Surgical Services, an academic-based contract research organization focused on the medical device arena. This group is now part of Wake Forest Innovations, an economic and innovation epicenter in Winston-Salem. After Wake Forest Innovations, Dr. Woods joined the University of North Carolina at Pembroke as the Director of the Entrepreneurship Incubator, helping small businesses start and grow in a rural, disadvantaged area. Dr. Woods is currently the Chair of the College of Business at Johnson & Wales University – Charlotte where he serves as a mentor to future student entrepreneurs, director of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center, and advocate for the faculty. Dr. Woods holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychobiology from Purdue University and a Master of Business Administration from Ball State University.
