Biography and Expertise
My mission as a teacher is to help my students learn how to become effective leaders in their chosen careers in ways that are both personally and professionally fulfilling! In a fast-changing work world that will continue to be filled with many unanticipated challenges and opportunities.
In addition to my formal education (BA in psychology from Princeton and PhD from Yale in organizational behavior), I have had wide-ranging real-world experience that includes working in Brazil; being a professional squash player who was also a sports business consultant; working as a planner for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, DC; doing management consulting in New York and writing and hosting shows for public television. For the past 20 plus years, I have also worked part time as an executive coach and trainer.
In addition to giving leadership courses at JWU, I have written two well received professional books: “Becoming a Can-Do Leader: A Guide for the Busy Manager,” and “The Career Portfolio Workbook.” I continue to do leadership articles, videos, blogs, webcasts and international presentations for the Association for Talent Development (ATD), the world’s premier association for workforce development professionals.
My most recent article on leadership development, “Don’t Let Managers Down,” was the cover story for TD Magazine’s July 2021 issue. I am currently doing a lot of blogging and presenting for professional associations on the topic of how managers can excel at unleashing the Can-Do Spirit of their workforce.
When appropriate, I make every effort as a professor, to bring my wide-ranging professional and real-world experience into my teaching and advising. And I take particular pleasure in helping my students find personally satisfying ways to manage their careers as leaders.
