Biography and Expertise

Raised in New Orleans, Deet Gilbert pursued her academic journey at Green Mountain College in Vermont, where she earned a bachelor of arts in liberal arts. Following her undergraduate studies, Gilbert returned to New Orleans to further her education at the University of New Orleans, receiving a master of fine arts (M.F.A.) in drama and communications. In 2019, she added to her academic credentials by obtaining a master of science in human resource management from Johnson & Wales University.

Gilbert brings over 15 years of experience in front-of-house management, having worked in some of New Orleans’ most renowned dining establishments. Gilbert spent five years at Bayona, a top-rated restaurant, before continuing her career at Peristyle, another acclaimed fine-dining establishment. It was during her tenure at these institutions that she refined her expertise in fine dining service and management. In 2005, Gilbert relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she briefly managed Upstream before transitioning to academia as a faculty member at Johnson & Wales University – Charlotte Campus.

An accomplished hospitality professional, Gilbert holds the Hospitality Grand Master Certification from the Federation of Dining Room Professionals, the organization’s highest distinction. Gilbert is also a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE), Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), and Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS). Additionally, she holds a Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wines and Level 2 Certification in Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Gilberts’ expertise in wine extends to achieving the French Wine Scholar (FWS) certification from the Wine Scholar Guild.
