Biography and Expertise
Daniel Stanton attained his Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Biology from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. There he worked on cell cycle regulation and the identified circadian clock genes in a few species of annelids and flatworms. He also gained experience as a microscopist, a skill that led to his employment as the microscopy lab manager at the University of Florida Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred, FL. While at the UF CREC, he has collaborated on papers examining the pathology of citrus diseases and pests, marine and freshwater worms, cell lines, manatee and elephant sperm, and tortoise mycoplasma. In addition to his role as a microscopy lab manager, Daniel is a collaborator on citrus blight project where he and collaborators are developing and evaluating early diagnostic methods and a CRISPR solution to aid in combating the disease. Daniel has also taught at the collegiate level. He previously taught courses in microbiology at Polk State College in Lakeland, FL. He currently teaches courses in general biology, human biology, and environmental biology at Valencia College in Orlando, FL.
With a passion for research and a desire to mentor the next generation of biologists, Daniel enrolled to attain his PhD in the Animal Molecular and Cellular Biology program at the University of Florida in Fall of 2019 under the mentorship of Dr. John Driver. He joined Dr. Peter J. Hansen lab in the Spring of 2022 after his current advisor relocated to the University of Missouri but remained on Daniel’s committee. Daniel focused his research on the role of the circadian clock in development allowing him to gain experience in mammalian biology. His PhD was awarded in August 2025.
