Biography and Expertise
Silva’s background is in the hospitality industry, her experience was focused in the area of hotel operations. She spent over 12 years in the industry having held a variety of positions, including the position of Director of Operations for a full-service Sheraton resort. prior to changing her career to higher education.
In 2006 she joined JWU as a faculty member in the International Hotel School. She teaches a variety of courses on topics including managing the hotel guest experience, sustainable hotel support operations, hospitality sales and meeting management, human resources, international culture and protocol, and international policies of tourism. She enjoys sharing her experience with students and providing them with the support and mentoring essential to their success.
She has been a faculty leader for more than 14 Study Abroad programs. Silva was the faculty advisor for the International Hotel and Tourism Management Degree Program and traveled abroad with students for the spring terms to Switzerland (2008-2011) and then Italy (2012-2014). During the term abroad, she taught three classes while also coordinating site visits and travel to locations in the region. Silva continues to be involved with study abroad as a faculty advisor for study abroad programs. She has led groups to Belgium and Spain for study abroad during the summer and has been the faculty lead for several Familiarization (FAM) trips with the students enrolled in the Tourism & Hospitality Management Major to destinations such as Sicily, Guatemala, South Africa, Peru, Belgium, Costa Rica, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Silva has been the advisor for the JWU Student Chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality since 2009. NSMH was recognized by JWU in 2020 as the Student Organization of the Year. Silva was recognized as the Advisor of the Year in 2017 by JWU an in 2020 she was awarded Chapter Advisor of the Year by the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality.
