Student Engagement Programs
JWU Charlotte’s Student Engagement department offers opportunities to build individual and group leadership identities, abilities and confidence, and to deepen your understanding of leadership’s role in social responsibility.
The programs and activities are designed to meet the diverse needs of student leaders and organizations. We encourage you to take advantage of any upcoming leadership programs that fit your interests.
Leadership Programs
Many students discover and/or build upon their leadership experience and skills at JWU. Promoting their passions or interests with involvement in an existing student organization (or starting a new one), serving on the Student Government Association (SGA), taking a leadership role in a club or organization — these are just a few examples of how leaders thrive. Student Engagement works with student leaders throughout their four-year journey.
Student Government Association (SGA)
JWU Charlotte’s Student Government Association (SGA) works to advocate for the financial, academic and social needs of the student body. By acting as the official voice for the student body, students can help resolve issues affecting their peers.
Elections for new senators and officers are held in the fall and spring. By getting involved, you’ll be working for positive change on campus; from fostering a sense of community to encouraging student involvement and keeping open the lines of communication between students and university administration
Campus Activities Board
The Campus Activities Board plans and coordinates on-campus events. The organization works closely with the Student Engagement team to create engaging and fun events that become campus traditions.

Student Leader Workshops
Launched in the Fall 2022, the monthly Student Leader Workshop series expanded in the Fall 2023 to include weekly offerings. The workshop series meets every Friday during the academic year from 9am-10am in the Academic Center. The series covers topics such as language and history of leadership, leader identity development, team development, mentorship and more.
Student Engagement believes all students are capable of growing their leader identities, abilities and confidence. The Student Leader Workshop series is available to all students regardless of positional title, role or involvement in student organizations. Anyone with an interest in bettering themselves and those around them are encouraged to participate.
Community & Volunteerism
JWU has been highly involved in the Charlotte community since our campus opened in September 2004. We proudly support our nonprofit partners through various volunteer opportunities and in-kind support particularly in the focus areas of health, hunger and education.
Our Student Engagement and Community Relations departments promote leadership and volunteerism amongst students, faculty and staff. Our students’ involvement with community activities enhances their knowledge of real-life issues and provides valuable practical experience in ethics, leadership, community and social responsibility.
Campus Traditions at JWU Charlotte
At JWU, some of our best memories aren’t made in the classroom – they’re made at the events that bring the whole campus together. Student Engagement plans and hosts these traditions throughout the year, from the first night of Weeks of Welcome to the final celebrations in spring before graduation.
Some of our most anticipated campus traditions are:
- Ignite the Night: A night to welcome the new class of students with music, food and lighting up the residence hall courtyard with paper lanterns
- Weeks of Welcome: A series of campus events, orientation sessions and social activities to kick off the new school year
- Homecoming & Family Weekend: A weekend for current students’ families to come to campus for fun activities and events
- One Ton Sundae: Build your own free sundae with a large bucket of ice cream and an extensive toppings bar
- Senior Week: A week of spring semester activities to celebrate the end of the semester and the upcoming graduation of the senior class
- Wildcat Wahoo: An on-campus carnival complete with rides, games, music and food
- Wales & Tails: A spring event to relax before finals with food, music, games and pets
